Annual Barbecue 2005

Saturday 13th August 2005, a little later than for previous years as the Vickerstown Institute had been booked solid throughout July. But the change of date did not worry us as we still managed to pick a day when it rained!

The numbers were down a little on previous years as well either due to the date, holidays, or a certain amount of lethargy but no matter there were just over a hundred turned up resplendent in colour as usual to enjoy a pleasant evening. As Social Secretary I must thank Brigham for all his efforts this year as he booked the venue, arranged the disco and singer and organised the catering. All the social team had to do was advertise and sell tickets then turn up and organise the evening. Thanks for the help on the evening also from Brenda and Jeff Thomas who ran the raffle and for allowing Shona to win the first prize; thanks also to Alan Pillifent who volunteered his skills as rum bosun for the evening complete with his C U Jimmy head gear.

The evening started fairly slowly, but then we have a tendency to spend the first hour generally chatting and renewing old acquaintances. The disco and entertainment was provided by Stuart Hudson an ex Sea Cadet who soon had us dancing and working ourselves up ready for a very welcome "up spirits".

It seems from the selection of photos that most if not all enjoyed their evening which turned a profit of £155. The Vickerstown Institute waived their usual room hire fee and the singer, Stuart, reduced his fee for the disco and actually performed free of charge himself to support donations to the Sea Cadets. If we add to these to the takings from the "up spirits" we should be able to agree a donation of around £100 to the Sea Cadet Funds. Well done to you all.
