Torres

As previously reported in these pages the Polish boat Orzel a Russian SSK non AIP  was invited by the RN in 2003 to participate in the annual SM v SM Exercise off Norway. Use to be called Fishplay in the 60's. Orzel was pitted against the Trafalgar. The reported score Orzel 4 Trafalgar 0.

The Yanks had a Swedish AIP boat on hire, complete with its Swedish crew on the West Coast, for two years and found they came  second very often. The Collins Class are also reported to have caused problems to the USN in exercise off Pear Harbour. On one occasion penetrating the Tasks force screen and giving lots of green grenades to the centre piece CV  whilst they were on high alert actually looking for the Dinks knowing they were in the area and tasked to attack.

I think that it would be interesting that one SSN (french "Amethiste" class, by   example) would participe in the excercise.  I'm not a submarinist, only a fanatic of this class of boats, and I would like no konow dates about a tactical fighting  between a SSN agaist a SSK with PEM AIP propulsion system, like "Scire" or "U-31".

The info of previous exercises between a "Los Angeles" clas SSN and one italian "Todaro" class 212 AIP SSK, in littoral waters of USA. are secrets, but some people said that the italian sailors where a littli smile when they get out of her boat...

NATO FORCES GATHER IN THE MEDITERRANEAN FOR NATO’S LARGEST ANNUAL ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE EXERCISE

Ten NATO nations tasked six submarines, 18 aircraft  (including eight  ship-based helicopters) and 8 surface ships to take part in "Noble Manta 10", NATO’s largest annual Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise from 10 to 24 February.

NOBLE MANTA 2010 is a tactical level, ASW focused live exercise geared towards individual unit and task group level training. Furthermore it aims to provide operational training in potential tasks/roles and missions of the NATO Response Force (NRF).

The exercise is conducted in a continuum free play way but in cycles, to provide equal training opportunities to the participants. Submarines will change their roles in each cycle. While the overall aims of the Noble Manta series apply, the following aspects characterise Noble Manta 10:

– Dedicated Submarine vs Submarine events in a ‘quiet’ environment

– Mission based free play with multi-dimensional threat

– ‘Hard’ ASW (Limited to non-kinetic options to manage submarine threat)

– Air ASW operations with AAW threat

Scheduled by Allied Maritime Component Command Naples, it is conducted this year on 10-24 February 2010 by Submarines Allied Naval Forces South (SUBSOUTH) Headquarters and Maritime Air Naples (MARAIRNAPLES) Headquarters.

More details about the exercise, names and photos of the SSK'S  (including a pair with AIP System), surface ships and aerial actives,  in the official website:
